Regional Meet this Saturday

Tue May 05 2009 @ 10:18 AM

We are running in the Region 32 Championship meet this Saturday. The first event starts at 9:30, there is a coaches meeting and a volunteers meeting at 9:00. THIS IS A LONG MEET! I am warning everyone, we run heats of every event, we run according to the schedule, we don't consolidate heats. The schedule, which is available in the track packet at www.philacyotrack.blogspot.com, has the last event going off at or near 3:00.

Some important notes: - I have to enter you in races before 5:00 today, once entered, there is no changing. - This is a qualifying meet, individuals who finish in the top 6 advance to the Area Championships, relays that finish in the top 4 advance. If you do not finish in the top 6 or 4, you do not advance. - There are no substitutes, if you are not entered in the 1600 and Johnny or Janey do not show up, you cannot take their place.

Please take a look at the program so you are familiar with the order of events. I have only entered a few relays: - Cadet girls 4x200: Manion, Casale, Harper and Fisher - Minor girls 4x200: M. Dougherty, Goodwin, McShea and Steely, with Snarponis as alternate - Novice girls 4x100: Diebold, Gallagher, Sowden, Talucci

I will try to send around the list of events I have entered, I have to figure out how wagdogs and attachments work.

Upcoming Meets

Thu April 30 2009 @ 03:14 PM

Our season is getting ready to head into Championship mode. Our last regular season meet is this Sunday. At this meet the events will be: 4x800; 100; 1600; 400 and 4x100, Long Jump, Shot Put and Subnovice 100. The coach from St Monica's will conduct a shot put clinic on Sunday if anyone is interested.

I am inviting all 3rd grade subnovices to run in an event other than the 100, that means the 1600 or the 400, please let me know your preference.

The Region 32 Championships will be held on SATURDAY May 9th, starting at 9:00 AM. For the Regional meet, as well as the subsequent Area and Archdiocesan Meets, there are limits and restrictions on the number of events one may enter. You cannot enter more than 3 events as a Novice or Minor and not more than 4 events as a Cadet. Also, you cannot run more than 2800 meters, which means that you can't run the 4x800, 1600 and 800. I need to enter rosters before Tuesday May 5 at 5:00 PM. To that end, if your child has a preference on events, I need to know that ASAP. His or her preference does not mean that race is guaranteed, we are limited to 3 entrants per event, per gender, per age group. This should not create a problem, remember that we have SKS and STGC competing as separate programs. This may impact the relays, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Also, there is the potential for your child to compete in the high jump. I have asked the coaches from St Norberts and St Monica to run a clinic next Monday night at Conestoga HS at 6:30 PM, if you are interested please let me know.

Lastly, for the Region Meet, we have to supply officials to help conduct the meet. We will have automatic timing, so that job is covered. I will be running the Clerking Area along with Kathy Keene, the coach from Sacred Heart. I would like to find at least 4 parents to contribute time on Saturday to assist running the meet. I promise to give you assignments that will allow you to watch all the races, cause you low stress and high gratification.

Penn Relays 2009

Sat April 18 2009 @ 01:57 PM

We are running SEVEN teams in the Penn Relays this Tuesday, April 21, 2009. The Penn Relays is the country's oldest and most prestigious relay carnival, and carnival is the right word! Tuesday night the CYO takes over Franklin Field. The age groups are slightly different, only Juniors and Seniors, based on birth year.
I have entered the following teams:

Junior Girls: Allison Snarponis, Maura Dougherty, Annie McShea, Samantha Talucci and Sofi Sowden Senior Girls: Margot Steely, Callie Fisher, Lia Goodwin and Devin Worthington Junior Boys: Jack Rooney, Callaghan Hanson, Jack ALbro and Brian Long Senior Boys: Bryan Chesky, Jake Lowry, Danny Snarponis, and Andrew Weiner

Junior Girls: CJ Dawson, Aileen Manion, Riley Powers, and Lydia Sydnor Senior Girls: Allison Casale, Rachel Harper, Caroline Manion, Alyson Makous Senior Boys: Declan Evans, Watty Hanson, Addy Hanson, Derek Mountain and Brice Sydnor

If there are 5 names, one is an alternate.

I would like to schedule a special practice on Monday night for these children. Can we meet at RHS at 6:00? Please let me know.

The meet schedule for Tuesday is:

5:45 athletes allowed on the field to warmup 6:00 Coaches meeting 6:15 Athletes clear the field 6:30 First Race: Junior girls

Each race probably takes 2-3 minutes to contest, there are 13 heats of the junior girls, 13 heats of the junior boys, 14 heats of the senior girls, and 14 heats of the senior boys. The Meet program is available on-line at http://philacyotrack.blogspot.com/

Meet info Sunday 4/19/09

Sat April 18 2009 @ 01:42 PM

We run once again at Haverford HS tomorrow. The meet will start a little earlier, as we are going to try to run the 4x800 at 12:05, then the Subnovices around 12:30. Subnovices will be run promptly, so please make sure that you are there in time to warmup and get set up. I will send separate notes to the families, but I would like to run the Hansons, Mountain and Evans boys in the 4x800. I would like to field a girls team, but know that this week we have a few travelers.

This week's meet looks like lots of distance races, the 1600 and the 800 are being contested. So are the 100, 200 and 4x100, so no crying from the sprinters!

If you are interested in any of the field events, please let me know and I will get you entered there. We are also going to contest the high jump at the regional meet, so if you think jumping into the big pits is cool, let's talk!

I will be sending out another note for Penn Relays, which are on Tuesday April 21 at Franklin Field. I tried to put together teams to maximize the chances for us to run.

First meet tomorrow

Sat March 28 2009 @ 06:09 PM

As a follow up to the earlier note I sent out, we are scheduled to begin our season tomorrow at Haverford HS with a start time of 12:30. The weather forecast is terrible. The Commissioner will make a "Go" or "No Go" decision early in the morning. I will send out emails and start making phone calls as soon as I get the message.

If you don't hear from me, we are running. Please make sure you dress appropriately.

This is a PRACTICE meet, no pressure, just some fun. Don't worry about anything. Uniforms are backordered, if you don't have one, wear something with SKS or wear something blue.

Questions? use my work email: jmanion@yesbank.com or my cell: 856-426-2503.

Weather and Practice

Thu March 19 2009 @ 02:41 PM

Just a quick reminder that I know I haven't shared yet, regairding practice and rain, if it is raining in Radnor at 5:00 PM, there is no practice.

Tonight's practice (3/19) will follow the above rule, if it's raining at 5:00, no practice. If it's not raining we are running. Two SKS track alums, both sophomores at Radnor HS and siblings of teammates, will help with practice tonight.

If anyone is available and interested, I will be holding an informal practice, weather permitting, Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM at Rosemont Park. Rosemont Park is on the corner of Montgomery Avenue and Airdale Ave. (From Villanova University, travel East on Lancaster Avenue (towards Bryn Mawr), the second light past the stadium is Airdale, make a left, go under the train tracks to the light at Montgomery, go straight, the entrance to the park is on your left.

How strong are you?

Fri March 13 2009 @ 05:17 PM

In recent years we have had disappointments due to injury. The link below takes you to a video where a college runner, with a VERY fast time, explains how strengthening his core muscles helped him improve. Take 5 minutes to watch the video. Try to do some of the exercises he does.

We will be incorporating some of these into our stretching and strengthening routines.

Track Update Part Deux

Fri March 13 2009 @ 09:21 AM

Here is the preliminary information for the 2009 Spring Track Season

Practices will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Radnor HS. Practices start at 6:00 PM and will last about 1 hour. Our first practice will be on March 17 (you can wear green if you feel obligated).

Meets will once again be held on Sunday afternoons. Our region has experienced some changes this year, MDP is no longer in our region and therefore we will NOT run meets at Upper Merion HS. All of our regional meets this year are scheduled to be held at Haverford HS. Meets start around 1:00 PM and should be done by 4:00 PM. Since we only have one facility to conduct the meets, we will have all schools at the practice meets each Sunday. This will require some flexibility with scheduling and most importantly, ensuring that we have adequate volunteers. Stay tuned for how the coaches best determine how to accomplish the equivalent of a regional meet each week!

Some other changes from prior years: new events! We will contest a 4x200 relay. Also we are going to attempt to run a high jump at the meets.

We have about 30 boys and girls signed up for the season. I am looking forward to getting going. The wagdogs site did not allow registration for sub-novices, we are still going to allow sub-novices to compete. We will have paper registrations to ensure that relevant contact information is captured, I would prefer to limit this to past participants and siblings, just to keep the numbers manageable, but neighbors and classmates are certainly welcome. I am just not going to publicize.

Schedule: March 29 at Haverford April 5 at Haverford April 19 at Haverford April 21 Penn Relays- Franklin Field April 26 at Haverford May 3 at Haverford May 9 SATURDAY Regional Championships at Haverford May 16 or 17 Area Meet site TBD May 30 SATURDAY Archdiocesan Championships- University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field
