Thanks for a Great Season

Thu May 21 2009 @ 01:32 PM

Parents and Players,

This is (probably!) my last message for the season. I wanted to pass on some information from last night's game to show you how great a game that was. We had 24 at bats last night. We struck out only 4 times, meaning our batters put the ball in play 20 times. We had three hits, so that means that Nativity made 17 fielding plays. Usually when we hit the ball that much, good things happen. Sometimes, however, (and as much as it pains me!) you have to give the other team credit. Going into the game, we felt Nativity had to play a nearly flawless game to beat us. They did that, and they earned a hard-fought win.

I want to thank you all for the opportunity to coach the girls this spring. There is a special atmosphere around CYO activities that's not easily replicated in other leagues. Maybe the level of play isn't always as high as it is in travel leagues or on select teams. But I think the camaraderie, the rivalries, the sportsmanship, and the pride in representing your CYO team creates a unique environment and makes the girls' participation that much more enjoyable.

I'm sure I speak for Coach Hoban when I say that if the girls had half as much fun as we did, then the season was a tremendous success. The team that played in last night's game barely resembled the one that showed up for that first practice. We want to thank you all for your commitment to getting the girls to as many practices and games as you did. It was a crazier-than-usual year, but the level of participation was the primary reason this team improved so dramatically.

People often ask me why I continue to coach even though my children are well past CYO age. I probably have more fun coaching than the girls do playing (although with this group, it may be pretty close!). I also think it has a lot to do with the kids I have the privilege to coach. I can't imagine coaching a better group of girls than your daughters.

Thanks for everything this year! Enjoy your summer!

Coach Roynan
